Habben Jansen: Gemini's transshipment-based model does not include rising costs.

Shippers won't be charged extra for the transshipment process that will be a big part of Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd's Gemini Cooperation partnership starting next February, according to Hapag-Lloyd CEO Rolf Habben Jansen. He explained that while adding more transshipment ports does come with added costs, using a hub and spoke network actually helps save money because it makes better use of resources.

Habben Jansen assured that the overall costs of the Gemini network, including ship-related expenses and terminal handling costs, won't go up. In fact, he believes they might even decrease slightly.

In February 2025, Hapag-Lloyd will leave THE Alliance to team up with Maersk for Gemini, following the breakup of the Maersk-Mediterranean Shipping Co. 2M Alliance in January. The key focus of this new partnership will be the hub-and-spoke network, which both companies believe will greatly improve schedule reliability to over 90%.

However, some shippers are doubtful about Gemini's ability to meet its on-time performance goal due to the involvement of transshipment. Alison Leavitt, managing director of the Wine and Spirits Shippers Association, expressed skepticism, stating that transshipments haven't historically been effective and consistent in shipping.
